If you are going to use an excuse, eg there is a fault that means it wouldn't be appropriate to sell without getting it fixed, make sure that it is concrete enough to ensure that he gets the message that he has no chance of being the proud owner, not this week or next or ever.

just be honest and tell him that you can`t bear to part with it, don`t do what i did and sell it anyway cos it WILL break your heart and you`ll regret it.
