Call a piano tuner, they would know if its a reliable and worthwhile piano to own,and of course to service.Meet with the guy and maybe he could move it for you and check it out and tune it.

The reason he asked how tall it was is because old uprights are not worth anything in value terms but if you are just looking to have something to play on its great. My first piano was an old upright. But for quality sound and keyboard action you would need to get a baby grand or a spinet their design makes the keyboard sound much less hollow and tinny sounding. They are very heavy and cannot take them apart. So he is correct in costing a lot to move.

A piano is kinda like a friend. It doesn't talk back! and if you are mad, you can play a hard tune, if you are sad , play a lonely tune, if you are - You get it? I hope this helps!

I know if you drop one on your foot, you'll be glad it wasn't your organ.
