Here's some stuff that i found that works:

1. Perscription savings card if you are a AAA member! We saved 75% on our costs for my husbands post surgical pain meds.
2. ??? I wish I had more tips!! Besides staying physically healthy through diet and exercise.

What doesn't work:

1. Trying to price shop at different clinics or hospitals. They will NOT give up the information, and claim not to "know" the price until after the procedure is completed.
2. Talking to the administrator or financial counsellor - everyone says to do this - it totally didn't work for us.

Most hospitals have a very much non-publicized charity program for people who have incurred NECESSARY medical costs and simply cannot pay for them.

If you find yourself stuck with a big hospital bill because of an appendicitis attack, or some other unforeseen medical crisis, go to their financial department and ask them to help you file a request for financial assistance. Your bill will likely be reduced to a cost which you will be able to afford.

You will be required to give them a copy of your last year's income tax records and perhaps your last paycheck stubs.

On the items of what didn't work you need to go higher up the chain and complain.

There is a program Partnership for Prescriptions, the one that they have the ad for on tv.

Also, try getting in touch with your congresspeople and senators that cover your part of the State on both the State and National levels.
