If it's digital check the wire that runs from the sender(at the trani) maybe it got burned or yanked?
If its mechanical ( cable driven ) off the front wheel ,sometimes the end breaks off the cable.
Also on a cable driven sometimes the nut at the speedo comes loose enough that the cable does not hook up to the gauge.

You don't need to pay to have this fixed. The speedometer cable snapped on my Yamaha a while back, I purchased a replacement cable for about $12 and fixed it myself in about 25 minutes.

I'm not sure what your instrument cluster looks like, but you'll either have a vinyl or chrome sheath around the cable itself. It should run from your speedometer gauge and down the forks...possibly alongside your front brake line. Just change out this line, remembering to grease the wheel-end of the cable, and you should be just fine. Invest in a shop manual for your hog, if you haven't already done so.

Is the battery still up? on one of my bikes the battery went low and the first thing to go was the speedo and the tach. the bike still ran on the alternator - for a while.

cable probably broke somewhere, or the speedometer sensor unit is fubar. should be a realitively easy fix with a shop manual.
