We suffer as a result of the contents of our mind. Rumination, worry, worry! We are often eaten up by our remembered 'past' (and it is SO OVER that we can do nothing about it!). Our 'future' is often filled with hopes and dreams and rarely does it turn out the way we thought it would! If this is given just a little thought, I think it will lighten the suffering (mentally/emotionally), a great deal! So my question, is 'Now' all that we really know, for sure? I think to drop thoughts, not stop thoughts (that's impossible), to go about the life process, doing everything as usual, having fun, etc., but just watching the 'pasting' and 'futuring', letting the mind run on, endlessly...is something to 'think' about! :-) Someone told me once that "I", I mean "Me" is made up of thoughts...the ME that was born, free and unencumbered, this simple awareness, is really all that I am. The thoughts that drag at me, drag me down, are filled with "unnecessary suffering" .JUST SAY NO to them! :-)

I think that you are correct. You can find joy and contentment only in the present. You can't find happiness in the lamentations of the past or the anticipation of the future.

By becoming aware of those negative thoughts that are being nurtured by your overzealous ego, you can realize that you don't need to be controlled by them.

However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't have long term goals or think rationally about the future. Human consciousness is deep and multifaceted. Don't neglect the needs that must be fulfilled. Just relegate obsessive thoughts to the background of your consciousness.

of course NOW is real...if it wasn't then what are we in? but no matter what time we are in, 3 am in 2007 or 6pm 2006 it will always be NOW to us because that is what is currentley real... but the past is also just as real as present for the past is only what was once NOW...you should remeber not regret your past so live for the moment but still be wary of drastic decisions because they will affect your future which will some day be NOW... so i would say to learn from your past, good and bad but do not dwell on it...be wary of your future but do not live for what may be...live mostly for the moment and near future but have a back up plan for the long term
