first, i'd go to windows update and install everything you can. usually that installs needed drivers. if not, open up your case and look at the sound card to find out the make and model. then go to the internet and search for the drivers for your soundcard. depending on the file type of the driver you either need to run the driver if it's an exe or open up device manager and right click on the sound device and tell it to update driver. then when it asks automatic or manual choose manual and tell it where the driver you just downloaded is located on your computer.

What device is it?

Without the sound card model, I can do nothing.

Try driverguide.com for drivers.

from it's sofware driver cd
some drivers does not support plug and play or be recognized by windows
if your driver is not one of those then the driver might be corrupted
