I want to get a beta or goldfish for my desk at work. Since I don't work weekends should I worry about the fish dying or something since it won't get fed on the weekends?

i'd say definitely go with the betta. less waste than a goldie and you can keep it in a much smaller tank.

as for the feeding, you'll probably have a pretty healthy fish. most fish experts recommend fasting your fish for one day a week, so two won't give you any problems. just remember to really give your fish a good look-over when you get back from your weekends so you can catch any illness symptoms that might have shown up while you were gone.

and DON'T overfeed on the day before you leave! left over/uneaten food will start to break down on the bottom of the tank and produce ammonia n stuff you don't want to have building up in your tank. if you've never had a fish tank or don't know abou the nitrogen cycle, check out this site!

a plant or two in your tank will help to keep it cleaner as well. i suggest java moss and java fern - easy to care for with few needs and pretty easy to find.

good luck!

ps: 4 day weekends are another story. definitely arrange some feeding then or at least leave a feeding block in your tank.

Goldfish get pretty big and I'll assume your desk cannot hold a 20-30 gallon tank(the minimum for 1 goldfish). Go with a betta. Fish can go up to 2 weeks before they start becoming permanetly damaged from not eating, so don't worry about the 2-3 days your not at work.

The person below me mentioned a plant for the betta to eat. Bettas are carnivores. They won't touch plants.

I have a betta in a 5g tank on my desk here at work. Its good for a betta to go a day or two with no food anyway.

Depending on how cold your office gets you will want a larger tank for a heater. Several people have had their betta die cuz its 68 in the office and the water is freaking cold.

There is a certain plant that you can buy to let flout in the bowl with a beta that the beta with feed off of. But of course these type of fish don't have a very long life span anyways. you don;t have to feed the fish but maybe a couple times a week when you have the plant. Any pet store should know what your talking about if you ask about it.

my reccomendations...don't get a gold fish ,they eat a lot and produce a lot of waste. A betta would probably be best for your desk because naturally, in the wild, they go about three days between meals. I would suggest getting java moss because it helps to keep the tank clean, less cleaning for you and better water for your fish.

get a holiday block, but take it out on Monday. The fish should be ok anyway.
