This is a classic case of an aggressive-minded regime testing our resolve. The Iranians want to see whether Britain and the US have the fortitude to stand up to their aggression, or whether we'll retreat.
The reason they chose this moment is likely because the Democrats, who control Congress here in the US, are on the attack against President Bush with their vote to bring home our troops in a year and a half. Iran wants to see how far it can push us.

Nobody believes the Iranians anyway does not matter what they say and if the Brits "confess" it will have been under extreme duress - called torture.
More to the point why do we keep reporting the lies from Iran and not reporting our side of the story which is the Iranian Navy were in Iraqi waters and should have been sunk!!

Er ... not to stir up any old memories or suggest that Royal Marines aren't infallible or anything, or indeed suggest that bootnecks are not amongst the finest intellects of the British or any other nations armed forces - BUT : I seem to remember them confessing to invading Spain during an exercise off Gibraltar in February 2002. Some sort of device called a compass proved to be part of the problem. They did an amphibious landing on one of the Costas by mistake.

Some of the answer suggest that the Iranians might not be telling the truth is that similar to "weapons of mass destruction" and " launch in 45 minutes".I am an ex British serviceman and I hope these people are handed back unharmed but surely it could be possible that they were in Iranian waters.
I was in Spain when the marines landed in La Linea instead of Gibralter.

Confessed to having strayed into Iranian waters, is what the Iranians have alleged. Britain has said that had been searching for smugglers off the coast of Iraq had been in Iraqi waters.

the British navy strayed into Iranian waters its not the first time . guess Iran wanted the media coverage. The sailors will be returned is just a big game with deadly results possible.

The Brits did stray into their waters illegally. Secondly, the sanctions are still a joke. It's not going to stop Iran's uranium-enrichment process.

I'm guessing that either the sailors have not admitted to being in Iranian waters, or that some torture was involved.
The Iranian government is great at making things up. For instance, they are enriching uranium for Energy Purposes only. Isn't that what their oil is for?

They say the 15 British sailors captured yesterday confessed to being in Iranian waters and not Iraqi. Whether or not they did say that or the Iranians said that is questionable.
