These are separate issues, but I think that some people are motivated by fear, and some by revenge, and that they do not have the facts about the death penalty system and its alternatives. Here are a few of the facts, verifiable and sourced.

Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think about the consequences or even that they will be caught (if they think at all.)

Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.

Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever, is certainly no picnic. Life without parole incapacitates a killer (keeps him from re-offending) and costs considerably less than the death penalty.

Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence, many having already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person the real criminal is still out there and will have successfully avoided being charged.

Re: DNA
DNA is available in less than 10% of murder cases. It’s not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.

Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.

Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense.

Absolutely right- Why ARE some against the death penalty and for abortion? Even better question. For that matter, why are some against animal experimentation and for abortion? I guess a mouse is a more sentient being than an unborn baby? Save the gray owls, kill the children.

No. professional-existence is in basic terms used while discussing abortion. there's a meta-existence circulate that's against abortions and the loss of life penalty (between different issues). EDIT - A remark on the loss of life penalty. Our criminal justice device makes blunders. as much as now there are a hundred thirty people who have been given the loss of life penalty then later exonorated because of the fact of latest info. There are additionally a minimum of 13 who have been incorrectly placed to loss of life. So the loss of life penalty does not advise you're taking a to blame existence.

A true and perfect society cannot exist that believes in killing of any kind. There is no true or perfect society. Humans are imperfect and commit crimes. Society makes rules for all of us too live by. They are not a secret. They are known to those that commit crimes. Most people that are executed, made a choice and committed a crime against society by killing another or more. We justify the executions as punishment for breaking society rules. Why would you want to keep them around?

How do we justify abortion of an unborn child? What has the child done to justify its execution? What rule has it broken? If it was not wanted, what choice did it have? I know - it is an imperfect human and could commit a crime in the future.
If you are reading this, be glad that your mother didn't believe in abortion. If you still believe in it, take the responsibility to make sure no more like you come into this world.

The death PENALTY is punishment for a crime the person has been convicted of. Abortion is killing an INNOCENT human being. You don't have to agree with me, but I hope you can see the distinction.

Because abortion brutally kills an innocent human who could do nothing to either stop or cause it. The death penalty brings justice to people who have been proven guilty of horrendous crimes and knew the penalty exsisted before they acted. - An eye for an eye.

This is called hypocrasy (spelling?)! These same people who feel that "life is life" and that "life begins at fertilization" and only God has the right to terminate that life, happily and joyfully condemn others to death if they have commited a "violent" offense.

These same people do not read and UNDERSTAND the bible they quote!

There really isn't much in common between the situations, so it is not necessarily inconsistent.
