I am 31 weeks and was just curious? I know everyone is different but can you start dilating before you are in labor or can it happen gradually before labor?

Thank you!!!

Everyone is different. At 32 weeks, I was 2+cm with all of my children. But, I also have had all of my children earlier than my due dates. Some women go to 2cm and are stuck there for weeks. Yes, dilation occurs before active labor and you can get very far along in dilation before going into active labor. I was 6cm with my third and would have probably gone farther if not for induction. But, if this is your first child, it is unlikely you will go past 4cm before active labor begins. After having 2 or more children, it is easier to predict how soon labor will come, because most women tend to fall in patterns with dilation, amt of weeks pregnant, etc. Then again, some women have no similar patterns in their pregnancies. I know this has probably confused you more than helped you, but the truth is that no answer suits every pregnancy. Congratulations and Good Luck!!

I was 1 cm dilated at 37 weeks than at 38 & 39 weeks I was 3 cm. I was induced at 40 weeks and 1 day (and I was still 3 cm until they started the medicine..)

you can start dialating a few weeks to even a month or more before you deliver. Your body produces minor contractions and these aid in dialation. At 32 weeks i was 3 cm dialated with no probs and delivered at 39 weeks. it does happen sort of gradually. you can have your doc check you when you start getting closer to due date. the more contractions you have the more you will dialate. as always if your contractions develop any discernable pattern and start getting closer together call your doctor. first time moms don't usually dialate fast, but just to be on the safe side.

you can start dilating anytime. i started to dilate with my 2nd child when i was 26 weeks along. now im 38 weeks along with my 3rd and i just started to dilate 4 days ago. everyones bodies are differant and move at there own pace. just sit back and relax, you may not start to dilate until your into active labour.

some people dialate before its time at least to one cm and sometimes up to two and can stay that way for a lil while but once you get to three get ready!!!! but usually by the time u dialate to two it happens quickly and within hours until u have a bundle of joy! best wishes. i hope this helps.
