I agree. Too much homework can be counter productive. Yet I do agree that some homework should be assigned but not to the extent that it takes away the students free time. Here's a web site on the subject.

I think it depends on the school you go to. I teach middle school and we are not supposed to give homework. I think that's a little silly because there is going to be some homework, and they need to get used to setting aside some time to do it. I would like to assign stuff like having to study vocabulary words for 15 minutes a night. But I can't. Some of our students do end up with homework if they don't get finished in class or study hall. But I don't think there should be so much homework that the kids can't relax over the weekends.

Yeah, I get way too much. It's not good that I go seven and a half hours and then have an additional five to six hours of work without getting paid! Seriously.
I think there should be a limit of one hour of homework a night. Most of the homework I get is just busy work (work that doesn't teach me anything, such as, a word search with 100 words). If the homework was limited and actually taught me something, it would be better.

Suck it up. I complained tons when I was in middle and high school, but when you get to college, you're going to wonder how you ever thought a five page paper was something hard.
If you really want spare time, I suggest working ahead. Set aside one day (on the weekend or something) and just do all the homework that you know you're going to get for the next week. That way, when you get home tired after school, you can relax and not have to worry so much.
If you still absolutely can't deal, try talking to the teachers, starting a petition, discussing it with your parents... this will only work if it really IS too much. If you're saying that you have no spare time, but spend three hours a day checking your email, then you shouldn't be complaining (I'm not saying that you do this, since I have no idea), but if you are working from the second you get home until the second you go to sleep, and you still can't get everything done, then you actually have a problem.

It depends on how much homework and what grade you are in. Sometimes teacher give kids homework because the disruptions in class make it impossible to get everything completed in class.

It seems like in Elementary School we got more homework, same with junior high. But now that I'm in high school, besides a couple projects that we can finish partially in class and reading assignments, we really don't have a lot of homework.

Blame it on the current US Administration. Congress and President Bush passed the "No Child Left Behind Law" which punishes teachers if you (students) do not ALL (100%) do well on your state exams. We, as teachers, are now forced to give you SO much more material to make sure you are passing those exams or we all get fired. If it really ticks you off, have your parents complain to their congresspeople to get the federal govenment to review this law. I guarantee that if we weren't under such strict guidelines and pressure, we would come up with fun, exciting, and homework-less ways to learn the material you need.

Something to keep in mind that SOMEONE is grading that homework. It is just as much work for your teachers AND the purpose of homework is to reinforce skills taught during the day. We don't give homework to torture you but to MAKE you practice what you would probably otherwise walk away from at the end of the school day without gaining a deeper understanding of a concept.

depends on classes
advanced classes have home work every night and even on week days but i think that is good because they did sign up for a harder challenging class
and simple regular classes have barely any home work so i think the schools are doing the right amouant
