Oh, and your not supposed to use the F8 key while shutting the machine down...
You need to press it several times during the load up splash screen ( the whole white text part and towards the windows logo part )

You will need to hit the F8 key a few times right before the "Windows XP" logo pops up when you first turn the computer on.

so what were your trying to do. going into safe mode lets you see if the very basics of windows is working, or if you have to dig deeper and maybe have to reload windows from scratch.
