If I had sex on July 8, 2006 and July 9, 2006 is it normal to have a positive hpt on the 18, or is it too soon?

Did you take a test? It really depends on the test, there are first response ones that work within few days. There are also ones that work within 5 days. Read the package label it will say how soon they can read accurately.
If you took it and it’s positive then, Yes, it’s possible.

That is quite a bit too soon for it to show up on an HPT.

Yes it is possible. They say 14 days but I believe you can have them sooner. I know someone who had a positive 11 days after.

too soon, it takes 14 days after you have sex to show up on a test.
