The cervical cap is a cervical barrier type of birth control. It fits snugly over the cervix, the entrace of the uterus, and blocks sperm from entering the female reproductive tract. Cervical caps may be made out of latex or silicone.

The cervical cap must be inserted sometime before sexual intercourse, and remain in the vagina for at least 8 hours after a man's last ejaculation. It is usually recommended to apply spermicide inside the cap.

The cervical cap is a form of birth control and should not be used to control you menstrual bleeding. Leaving it in for more than 24 hours, or using the device improperly can cause it to fail.

There is a feminine protection device called Instead that can be inserted like the cap, and will collect the menstrual blood. Unlike the cervical cap, it does not prevent pregnancy and is disposable. It is designed only for use during your period.
