The traditional method for joining a sorority is called "rush", which gives the rushee and the members of the different houses to get to know each other prior to pledging. You can't join just any house; you have to be issued a pledge offer. After I rushed, I listed 3 houses I was interested in. 3 houses that were offering a pledge matched up, so I was able to choose from the offers.
