When it gets down to the end of the game, one team is trailing and is forced to foul, they always run around trying to catch the player with the ball and foul them. Why? At that point in the game, the leading team is going to be in the bonus, so why not just foul anybody, regardless of whether they have the ball or not? They will go to the free throw line, which is what you want. Nothing says they have to have the ball. If it was me, I would just keep fouling the worst free throw shooter on the team.

good question

Fouling away from the ball intentionally is a flagrant foul which is worth 2 shots and can be shot by any player in the game when the foul was committed.

so would you rather have a 1 and 1 with they player that was fouled or an automatic 2 with the best shooter on the court?

I never thought of that. The referee might not notice a foul off the ball though. He or she will probably be watching the ball waiting for a foul on the person who has it. Also fouls off the ball are usually worse, and like someone else said if you do it it will probably be flafrant because you did it just to stop the clock and itwas intentional. But the ref can't say it if the person is going after the ball. If the person is desperate enough to get a flagrant foul for the championship game or something they might do it.

im guessing your talking about basketball
the losing team fouls when time is running down to
1) stop the clock when the oppenent has the ball giving the losing team more time to catch up
2) there is a chance that the person taking the free throw to miss 1 or both free throws
3) meaning if the opponent only scores 1 point on each of their possesions, then the losing team can come back and possibly make a 2 pointer or maybe a 3-pointer
4) if you do not foul the opponent, they will run down the clock(a full 24 seconds) gladly, with a chance that they might even make the 2 or 3-pointer.
5) fouling guarentees that the clock will stop, and you will gain possesion of the ball, and the chance that the opponent might not even score any points

Well they foul because when they take the foul shots they make one and the team down gets the ball.
if that makes sence.

if you just foul anybody, it more likely to be called an intentional foul.

well i guess most players dont do that because they think that the ref wont see them because the ref is wathcing the guy with the ball. good thinking though
