America is an ant compared to the ancient socities of Rome, Egypt and Sparta. Any three of those could kick america's @$$.

But I would have to argue that Egypt is the most powerful in history over Rome. For tons of reasons that would take too long to type here. I'm a history and anthro major...spend tons of time studying these things...

Trust me, Rome could have never defeated the Predynastic and Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms of Egypt.

That depends on your definition of power. Is it miliatary might? Territory? Economic influence? Cultural Influence?

Historically, in terms of culture, miliatary prowess, territory and econmic influence, the answer would be Rome. You look at the success of the Roman armies, the huge territory they governed, and then the lasting (to this day) cultural influence they have had. But for today, it would be the US. The US since WW2 has had a profound cultural and econimic impact on the entire world only matched in significance by the Roman Empire.

I would say that the Acheamenian Empire of the time of Zoroaster may have been the most powerful society in history, having indirectly left us with the legacy of monotheistic religion. Otherwise, the Sumerian (sited in modern day Iraq) Empire can still be seen to have provided us with the idea that the punishment fits the crime, one of themilestones in getting individual people to submit to the will of society in general. Rome.... there is the famous saying "the sun never settles in Rome." There was a time when this was true.,t their empire was big and powerful... but their greediness and selfishness got the best of them.. now ironically, Rome is one of the smallest cities in the world!
