You should definintely tell him as soon as possible. This has happened to me before. If he is really your friend then it won't really change your relationship. Don't be worried that it will ruin your friendship. IT WON"T

Well if he is your best friend then you should be pretty comfortable around him just write him a not and slip it in his locker that is what me and my best friend molly did to this one guy name Spencer eckert and we just called him ad told him and now i feel much better and he was not my best friend think of how i felt!
