Wow - definitely dont use Yahoo IM - Those people are crazy. Two ways I would do it:

1. If you have a router Plug both machines into it. The go on the machine that has the files you need. Right click on your C drive and choose properties - Go to the sharing tab. Choose share this folder If you see something that says run Windows file and transfer blah blah ignore select I understand just share my files and allow users to change my files...

Then run and ipconfig on that machine by clicking start run type in cmd and click OK. Type in ipconfig and hit enter. Write down you IP Address.

Go to your other machine - Click start run and type in \\the ip address - example \\192.168.1.101 then click OK - Your C drive should show up - Copy the files

2. If you dont have a router - Go to Fry's or best buy and buy a crossover cable - Plug the cable into each network port so the computers are connected together. Perform the same steps above to share the c drive and to get the ip and then doing the \\ipaddress from the other machine

Good luck - Dont be scared you cant break anything!

The easiest way would be to creat a local area network (lan) using a router or hub, plug both computers into the hub using cat5 cable (ethernet cable). Then you share all the drives on your laptop by right clicking and choosing share (go through all the security stuff and click ok). Then you go to network places on your desktop and choose show workgroup computers, all the drives from your laptop will appear. Click and drag the files you want to the appropriate drive on your desktop.

I normally use my Flash Drive (or usb pen), but if I have loads to transfer i either put it on an external hard drive or disconnect it from the Internet and connect it to the laptop...

Its a simple job, no point making a fuss over it.

If you cant make a simple network, put your laptop near your computer and use a usb pen. If you don't have one, buy one, they are very useful, and easy to use. I couldn't work properly without one as I'm always using different computers.

recently I wanted to transfer all the files from my old laptop (which is on its last legs) to a computer in my house; however, because of the age of te laptop, I couldn't transfer all the files through my wireless network. Eventually, I had to resort to putting all my files on a memory stick. ONLY DO THIS AS A LAST RESORT... IT TAKES AGES!

the easy way is to put it on a flash drive or onto a mp3 player or onto disc but its the size of the files if its a like 20 mb files some you can put onto a floppy disk if your laptop has one but if its somethink like 80 mb to 1 gig then it would be best to get a flash drive or buy some dvd-rw if you have a dvd-rw and then if you keep them on disk and if any think went wrong with your pc or laptop then u have got back up

XP has a Files & Settings Transfer Wizard, click Start - Help & support and get a tutorial. Or if you don't have a flash drive big enough you could burn them to cd.
