To decorate the outside of the shoe box, I sometimes glue photos around the outside, or glue colored paper in the shape of photo frames, and slide the photos into them.
To make a nice gift box, you could glue on the Sunday Comics, then finish it off with a row of lace around the top.
You could draw a picture on the side with a thin line of Elmer's glue, and then carefully lay yarn on it, to make a yarn drawing.
You could take several squares of fabric and glue them on to resemble a quilt, and maybe glue buttons on to embellish the squares. You could also do this with pictures cut from magazines.
You could glue on sequins, beads, pieces of broken jewelry, pottery or glitter, then cover it all with clear contact paper to keep it from rubbing off.
I have made many cross-stitch squares and glued them on boxes for gifts.

Get an empty bottle. Put a few wings on it. Paint it white. Put the in it and paint it like an area travel. Stand up as average. Win everytime. The egg is the spaceman. whilst you've received, you'll deliver me a kiss.

Find (or download and print) some vintage catalog and cover the box with it. Then brush it with a very thin layer of yellowish water color, and it will look vintage.
