Viewing Your Computer’s IP Information

Begin by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on the Run Icon, which will open up the Run Menu for you.

Locate the white area of the screen next to the word Open: in the Run Menu.

Now type in the word COMMAND and click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen.

For Windows XP, you can also type in the word CMD and then click on the OK button.

This will launch the Window’s DOS Prompt Command Window for you.

Now using your keyboard, type IPCONFIG /ALL and press the Enter key.

Windows will now display the IP Configuration Information for your computer.

When finished, simply close the Command Prompt window to return back to Windows.

Note: This Technical Brief Will Work For All Operating Systems Including Windows XP.

Generally, all you have to do is go to a command prompt (type "cmd" into the run dialog on your start menu) and then type "Ipconfig". This will give you your computers IP address.

If you are connected to a router, your IP address will be a generic one such as 192.168.0.1 or something like that. The router itself will be assigned the external IP address.

To find the IP address of your router, you can use a free tool at http://www.dslreports.com

The first way (described in the first post) is fine if you're not behind a router, however, if you are, you won't be getting your true IP address, but the one assigned by the router.
