World of Warcraft pet question?

Im a human mage and a noob but want to know what i need to do to get a pet and where to get one

Only hunters can have pets. Warlocks can have minions but not pets. You will have to make a hunter character if you want to have a pet. When your character will be ready for a pet you wil be told where to go for te pet tainer etc. happy hunting!

As a Mage you will not get a pet! At least not one that you can control. Only a Hunter has a "pet" ... warlocks get a counterpart to that. If you only want a pet to follow you around you can purchase a kitten =)
