I want to express my sadness if you've felt hurt by Christians.

It is hard to tell why any one individual would hate a gay person, because all the factors that motivate that hate may not be apparent, even to the person themselves.

However, one thing that may underly a lot of Christian opposition to homosexuality is that there are verses in the Bible that disapprove of homosexual sex (though this is debated by many). If the persons to whom you are referring take the Bible more or less literally, then they feel that God opposes homosexual behavior (at least, perhaps also identity, desires, lifestyle, etc.) and because they are seeking to follow God and align themselves with his views, they will disapprove of homosexual behavior.

However, often times they use this as a justification to indulge their own hatred or homophobia. That is not to say they don't believe what the Bible says or that this is how God feels, but they go too far, using that as a reason to act in ways that the Bible does not call them to do.

There are many who genuinely are trying to balance a deep commitment to belief that the Bible actually conveys God's opinions and to love their neighbor. This is where some of the "love the sinner, hate the sin" philosophy comes from.

Then there are plenty of Christians who either don't believe the Bible actually conveys God's thougths on things, don't think that the verses regarding homosexuality say what others think they say, or have a theological framework that removes some or all of the negative implication of those verses- if they hate gays then I don't know why.

I think that some of it is that some Christians DO believe that being gay, or perhaps more accurately engaging in homosexual behavior and encouraging others to do so, does hurt people. They may belive that it hurts the person, because they may belive that it is a sin (think of it as shooting off your own toes- God doesn't want you to do it), or that it is associated with an increased risk of health and emotional consequences. They may also feel that it denigrates a traditional family model, which they may feel is important for the moral, emotional, and psychological well being of children and society.

On this issue, it is very difficult to paint with a broad brush, as opinions are quite varied and nuanced. To do so may be something like a fundamentalist Christian asking why "gays hate Christians so much?" Some gay people would have a ready answer and others would be puzzled that gay people could hate anybody.

However, as I've said before, I think at least some of the most hateful Christians are probably motivated more by their own personal prejudices and emotions than by a committment to the Bible, even if they feel that it is really about the Bible.

I hope that you will come into contact with some Christians who are not haters, and have opportunity to share your story with them and listen to their stories as well.

I know not all Christians feel that way, but for the ones that do, it's a matter of brainwashing. The Bible has been misinterpreted (they neglect to read the entire passage and do not take the time period and the situation in the passage into account). The Bible has also been mistranslated several times and because of that, people got the idea that homosexuality is wrong in the eyes of God. I myself do not believe the Bible is God's word. Basically, the Bible is the cause of this hatred. The sad thing is, the churches' have come to accept this misinformation as well. It's a sad cycle.

In society, gay people tend to take care of their neighborhoods better and strive to be upstanding citizens.
However Biblically, homosexuality is an abomination against the natural order created by God. So, if you're a true believer in the ways of the Bible, then you can't practice homosexuality. There are no grey areas in this.
Also, many feel that open homosexuals present a distorted view of life to children who may be confused by this. Such views can lead to a deviant lifestyle for them in the future, unless they're properly guided.

I'm Christian, and I don't hate homosexuals. I see it as being perfectly normal. I don't know why my peers cannot get the picture that it is not a sin and that there is nothing wrong with it. Maybe they're just too ignorant to care. Besides, I love my family, no matter what. Myself, too!

they're afraid of what might happen if they had a gay friend because most Christians that hate gays live 24/7 by the bible

Those particular Christians that you speak of feel better or more holy whenever they condemn any one else. They like to judge others.

I mean murder is a sin too but when was the last time we saw a big protest saying, "God hates all murderers."

God doesn't hate anybody.

I am a Christian and I don't hate anyone. Christ teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Yes, the Bible teaches against homosexuality. It is not my job to change people that is the God's job. All I can do is love you where you are. My prayers are with you.
Love in Christ

Cause it's a "sin" in their eyes. Frankly I see nothing wrong with homosexuals or lesbians. As long as they don't cram their "gay rights" stuff down my throat I'll gladly support them and their cause.
