I am 6 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I failed the 1 hour glucose test for gestational diabetes last week with an ending glucose level of 188. I'm going back in 3 days for the 3 hour glucose test. Is it likely that I will fail that one too? Or is failing the 1 hour test common? Thanks for any input.

Yes, I was tested this early b/c I'm at high risk b/c I've had 2 children that weighed over 9 pounds. Also, this glucose level was on an empty stomach.

Unfortunately I don't have any good news for you, I thought I did tell I read that 188 was your fasting. My first glucose test was not a fasting and it was 151 which is 11 points over the want of 140. My 3 hour test which started with a fasting I passed with flying colors, I had this test at 14 weeks because of history in family of diabetes. I just took my hour test a couple of weeks ago again, not fasting and was 146 and had to retake the 3 hour test again and passed with flying colors. I am afraid with your numbers being so high on a fasting that it doesn't look good, but hey you never know, everybody is different. Good luck!!!

Just follow the instructions about carb loading two days before the test and don't eat or drink anything after midnight the morning of the test. I failed the 1 hour, then passed the 3hour. One whole month later the hospital rec commended that I take the 3-hour test a second time because the twins are big and I passed the 3-hour test a second time. Just make sure you follow the instructions about carb loading and then fast. You'll have a better chance of knowing the results are accurate if you follow the instructions.

I failed my first one badly (196). Watched my diet before going for the 3 hour test and did great (76 believe). I did not have preg-diabetes and my baby had good glucose levels when born. I’m a sweets junkie and was extremely surprised that I passed the test. You should watch for sugars in juices, chocolate, ice cream, etc. Even though I cut down on sweets I was getting lots of sugar from juice, esp orange juices and fruits. (Went crazy of these) My OB advised to mix juice with water 50/50 or 60/40. Less (no) sugar in tea or coffee, even sugar substitutes are bad (splenda). You are better off having real sugar. I still enjoyed an occasional brownie and ice cream, try sugar free ice cream they are half decent right now. It really is worth it knowing that you baby will be fine. Congratulations and good luck.
P.S. Ask the person giving you the test what is better to avoid or to eat to reduce sugar in your situation . I got my info form him and my OB.

Wow you are testing very early. Most women do that at 24-28 weeks. Many woman fail the 1 hr and pass the 3 hr it just depends.

I'm guessing you were tested that early because you are high risk..........so there is a bigger chance you will fail the 3 hr test.

Good luck!!

Eat some eggs or something else high in protein and low in carbs before you test. All three of my children were big and I am very over weight ( I was 33 when I got pregnant with my third) I had 3 glucose tests with my third and pass each one.

The one hour is just a screening - not a way to diagnose. My 1 hour was 140. I don't know what my numbers were for the 3 hour, but they didn't go over 135 so I passed mine.

if it was on an empty stomach then i highly doubt you will pass the 3 hour test. a non-diabetic person takes about an hour after eating to produce enough insulin to average out their blood sugar. sorry to say this but just be prepared to hear you have gd.

as long as you avoid a high intake of carbs you will be on track. and maybe talk to your doctor about seeing an endocrinologist as well if you do have gd, espcially since its this early on in your pregnancy.
