When putting my computer into standby FROM my desktop, it takes only a few seconds. However, when logging off my desktop, and doing a computer standby from the welcome screen, it takes at least 5 minutes. What is wrong?

To answer your questions:

Yes, the main reason I want to stand-by from the welcome screen is because I don't want other people on my desktop. No, it never takes 5 minutes to shut down, from my desktop or the welcome screen.

When you log off, Windows is attempting to close all your personal settings and background applications. When still logged on, it's simply saving the current state.
Does it take 5min to fully shut down?

Its probably shutting down a bunch of stuff that activates when yo log on .

If you dont need the extra security just go to standby from the desktop without logging off.
