Check the back if it says sterling or 925 its got 92.5 percent silver and the rest legaly can be anything else but its usually a coper alloy.
If its got symbols instead you will have to look it up in a book or online to see weather its sterling, fine silver or silver plate. A good place to look up silver symbols is in antique/colectables books and some jewelry manuals. when looking online its sometimes easier to search out the manufacturer and sites will usually pop up that have the silver content symbols.

Most silverware or silver utensils are made of sterling silver, meaning a fineness of 92.5%, the balance being copper. Check your flatware bottom... probably has some hallmarks or a number 925 stamped on it.
