Historically, Republicans have been for limited government, fiscal conservatism, personal choice, and support for economic freedom. These republicans believed that the government should have less control over people's lives, and that people should be more responsible for themselves.
The latest crop of Republicans have adopted a second series of traits that include strongly supporting the military, tax cuts, and moral positions on several hot button issues such as abortion, welfare and religion. There is a divide within the Republican party between these two camps, and up until recently, with the election of George W. Bush and the lock on Congress that Republicans had, the second group seemed to have the upper hand.

To many of the above answers: How are they racist? Aren't Liberals just separating us more with Affirmative Action nonsense?
