1st. Make sure the guitar is in tune.

Learn the major chords and placement. (A,B,C,D,E,F,G) I rarely use B

Practice makes perfect..

Find a song that you like that is played with the major chords first. Try to find one with 3 -4 chords if possible. I would recommend (G,D,and C) chords to begin with. It will be slow but I seemed to have done better and more determined when trying to play a song I knew. Search the web "guitar tabs" and look on the sites and search for songs you know with chords next to the file names.

Strumming and rhythm is very important when playing chords so search the web for techniques and patterns to learn some of them. I also helps to play the song (CD) while your playing to help figure out patterns and the rhythm. 1 strum is a downstroke followed by an upstroke . V=down ^=up. in the following example you would start with a down, skip the up, down,up,down.(ex. V V ^ V). Your pick hand will still come up after the 1st down stroke but you will not hit the strings. Therefore your hand will be the rhythm because its constantly moving up and down and your tempo (Speed) will be determined by how fast you move the hand.

Good luck and remember the web is full of help information, try searching "guitar lessons" and you'll find more information and tips!!!

A fret is the space between the bars on guitars neck. Most guitars have fret makers @ 5,7,9,12,15,17.... Some also have them started at 3,5,7,9,12...... 1 is at the top of the guitar fret board then 2...so on.... When looking at guitar tablutar....you see 6 lines, the top line is you bottom string and the bottom line is you top (thickest) string. Pick up the guitar like your playing it, then lay it back so that the strings are pointed up. When looking at the strings like this, this is how guitar tab is layed out because the smallest E string is now on top. 0 = open Example of G major as a chord then play G one string at a time. You play the frets from left to right so if done correctly you play the G chord, then strum down 1 string at a time.

You should start by learning the notes on the guitar, and then progress from that into learning open chord positions. Practicing is very key too. It is not something you can just pick up and be amazing right away. Try learning some songs you like, because that would make you like what you are doing more.

Okay, all the other guys seem to be covering chords, so I'll add this: DON'T PLAY TOO FAST. Start out slooooooooooooow. Not only will this increase your accuracy and allow you to build up greater speed eventually, but it allows you to focus more on your phrasing of riffs, chords and solos, so when you go to shred, it doesn't sound like you're just trying to play as many notes as you can.
