diesel engines in trucks have what is called a "jake brake" that controls the engine speed when slowing down. They tend to make a popping sound when working, so by saying no engine brakes, they probably are trying to stay below a certain noise level

This is for Semi Truck drivers it tells them that in this area they are not to use thier "Jake" brake... which is the noisy engine Compression release brake....
that slows the Truck down by the stopping of the combuaion process which propels it down the road and turns the engine
into a brake for a rather brief and temporary period...
This is mostly used on very very steep grades and also is used with the more conventional Air Brakes to keep them from getting to hot and fading out if over used....
these are used when trucks are coming down very steep inclines or hills and make a loud chugging sort of noise
Now in many areas like where there are lesser inclines where some drivers might tend to use them... but due to the noise near high density housing areas it can be against local ordinance or laws to use them...
Thse signs are reminders to the Truckers to help them avoid tickets and to keep the neighboring areas nicer to live and play in...

Hi,
They are actually refering to BIG TRUCKS. We have a brake on our engine called a "Jake Brake". It's a loud rumble that hear omitted from a Trucker's exhaust. We have 3 actually braking sytems, one is the transmission staying in low gears helps keep speed off, the actually brakes on our tires and finally one where it retards or closes the valves intermittently which creates pressure INSIDE the piston chamber, so it slows the pistons speed way down. I don't pay much attention to the signs. At 80,000 pds I need all my breaking power.

An engine brake on large trucks makes a lot of noise so they don't want to hear that in that particular area.

it means big trucks cant use their "jake brake" - which uses the engine to slow the truck without using the trucks brakes , the reason being that " jake brakes" are noisy

Diesel powered large trucks cannot use their engine brakes in that area, too darn noisy!
