Cover your windows so that sun wont hit you as much. It works.

A shallow-pile carpet or hard floor would help, but not by much. Try getting a small window fan or other upright fan. Then, fill two half-gallon milk jugs with water and freeze them. The next night, cut away the cardboard and place the two towers of ice next to one another in a pan deep enough to hold all the water. Turn the fan on and aim it between the ice, being careful to keep electrical things away from wet things. Voila! Swamp cooler.

Try to just open a window, if the heat is rising into your room it just needs to be exhausted, if your room is directly exposed to sunlight you may need to add a fan in your attic or invest in a air conditioner, As for the carpet it will work like insulation to keep the warmth in. So if your tearing it out you may want to consider a different floor.

If there's a window in the room you need to get the shades drawn. Less sun means less heat. Also, get in the habit of keeping the door open to your room. A closed door can keep one room warmer or colder than the rest of the house.

Try installing tile floors which usually stay cooler rather than the carpet. Does your room face the sun ? Maybe shade screens.

I don't know what time of day you are talking about, but it usually helps to keep the blinds/window shades closed to keep the sun out. If this doesn't help then a/c.
