Being from an old Vt. farm family and an ex cattle inseminator I can tell you two ways. From the old farmer side I can tell you how to bump for a calf. You would stand on the left side of the cow. Take your right fist and in front of and at the bottom of her flank push your fist quickly into her side and if there is a calf you will push it over and you will feel it come back and hit your fist. The cow will have to be 5 or 6 months and you will have to practice but once you get it you'll be able to tell. From being an AI tech I can say that you can also put on a long glove and insert your arm into the anus. Keep going. You will feel a long hard tube, the cervix, and at the end the uterus. You will be able to feel if there is pregnancy or not as one horn of the uterus, which ever horn the pregnancy is in, will feel larger. If the cow is farther along(4 or more months) you will feel the calf. With cows closer to delivery I've had the calf try to suck my fingers. This is just a quick description. There are many books out there on the subject.

You can either palpate them (stick you hand up their rear). Or there are blood tests out that you take a sample from under their tail and send it into a special lab to get it tested. If you're not sure what to do you can have a vet do it for you, too.

Unless you are sure you know how to test, let a vet do it.
