If he's a betta he is fighting his reflection. Male bettas will fight each other practically to the death of given the chance. They'll even fight their reflections because they think it is another male betta. They need to be kept alone.

Is Mr. Turkey a betta? Bettas are one of the more popular fish I can think of that would do this. He sees the reflection as another fish, and that is a threat to him.

I wouldn't recommend doing this to the fish, as it causes stress to them. Also, they may ram their heads into the glass at an attempt to get to the "fish" (reflection), which can cause trauma. A fish under stress is at an increased risk for injury, illness, and therefore, death.

Whatever type of fish it is, the answer is that it is territorial/aggressive towards its own species (and possibly to all fish in general). It sees the other fish as a danger and/or a threat. He is not attacking himself, but attacking the perceived threat (the "other" fish it sees in the mirror)

If it's a betta, they are very territorial! You put two males together and they will fight to the death. So, if you put a mirror, he thinks some other fish is in his territory.

Let's put it this way...fish are not the smartest in the pond. When they see their reflection, they think is another fish trying to invade their territory (the fishbowl)
