Depends on weight, weather, and age. Also depends on the dam's weight, milk, and health. Most foals can be weaned safely between 5 and 8 months of age.

I have had six foals born and I feel anywhere between six and 10 months is good. And you know the mare has always done this on her own except for one mare who would have nursed for ever and I did have to separate them. The other five foals were completely weaned by their mom and she did it each time between 6 and 10 months. Why the difference in age? I know the longer nursed ones were a little smaller, I think the mare has inside info. on how long they need her. I'm 47 and have had horses since my 9th birthday.

A 'baby horse' is called a foal. It should be weaned between 6 & 8 months old.
