When Swansons Frozen Dinners first came out in the late 1950s, the box was the same shape it is today, but the picture on the front was like a table model TV with the food pictured on the screen and a knob on the bottom of each corner, like volume/channel knobs.
Back then, tvs were made of wood, there were very few knobs and no remote.

They were called tv dinners, to be eaten on a folding TV Tray, in front of the ....TV.

I think when Swanson's first came out with it...people would eat the dinner on a TV tray while watching TV, instead of sitting at a dining table. The original TV Dinner came in an aluminum tray and was heated in an oven. As a matter of fact growing up in the early 80's we still had the aluminum trays.

They call it a tv dinner because back in 1950's when the TV dinner was invented by Swanson, they were a quick & easy meal to eat in front of the tv or when people were in a hurry. My favorite tv dinner is the turkey, stufffing, etc. I rarely ever eat them anymore.

Back in the 1950's when Swanson introduced the frozen dinners, people use to heat them up and watch the tube with their mate, or family. TV was a big deal then.
