Welcome to the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast
August 4, 1892. A wealthy businessman and his wife found brutally murdered in their Victorian home in Fall River, Massachusetts. The Accused: the youngest daughter, Lizzie. The Verdict: Not Guilty!
So goes the lore of the most famous crime in the annals of American history. The mystery remains: If Lizzie Borden did not wield the murder weapon, who did?
Our beautifully restored Greek-revival home is now a first-class bed & breakfast. You are invited to choose one of 6 beautifully appointed bedrooms and roam the house to learn the true facts. What were the thoughts of the first police officers on the scene? Who were the suspects? What was the public’s reaction? Will you join the legions who think Lizzie guilty, or will you choose to be a stalwart defender?
In the morning we invite you to enjoy a hot breakfast reminiscent of the food the Borden’s ate on that fateful Thursday in 1892.
For a unique experience, be our guest for an evening …Lizzie awaits you.

I grew up in Salem and just want to say that Salem is a great place... It's the overabundance of tourists at Halloween time that takes away the "charm".
Salem's is a very historic city... Incorporated in 1626, there is more there than Witches... Be sure to visit "Pickering Wharf"... the Customs house is there, on Derby Street... Learn about the East India Trading history... I have been out of the area for several years but I know museums have popped up all over. The actual old houses are where you want to go... The Witch house on Essex Street... The Witch Museum near Salem Common... and near there is the old Salem armory building that now houses the Tourist Information Center. Be sure to go to "The House of Seven Gables"... and show the kids a copy of the book with the same name by Nathaniel Hawthorne... I urge you... look deeper than the witch history and you will find the true charm of Salem.

Was in Salem over Labor Day last year and I must say that I was a bit disappointed. I always heard so much about this place and also grewup watching the Disney film "Hocus Pocus" with Bette Midler. Portions of the movie were shot in Salem and nearby towns. The place we stayed, the Salem Inn, was a complete dump and that put a damper on things from the get go. Things are a lot more spreadout than what we thought. We used our vehicle a lot more than we anticipated. One day we utilized the trolley which was very nice because you just buy a day pass and then you can jump on and off all day. Seeing as you will have young ones with you, a lot of walking might not be too much fun for them.
Like I said, things are spread out. So the Witch House might be a walk from the Witch Museum. Get a map to see where all the attractions are. The town was a bit cheesy I thought, maybe around Halloween it might be more livlier. You can see most all the attractions in one day. We were there 4 days and that was too long. We spent a lot of time at the Salem Beer Works and rather enjoyed their own beers. Another good restaurant is Finz, it's right on the water.
There are many 'witches' who live there and when you see one, you will know. We saw this one couple, man and woman, who clearly were different. Black dressed from head to toe and the witch emblem worn around their necks.
I mean, I am glad that we went one time, but I will probably never go back. And if we were to, there is a bed and breakfast there called the Morning Glory that looked charming and has gotten great reviews on tripadvisor.com. We saw the place when we went to the House of Seven Gables, as it is right next door.
Also, another little hole in the wall place to eat is called Reds. It was featured on the Food Network as the place to eat for diner like food. It is on a side street and gets quite packed around breakfast time. The lines forms out the door so the one morning we ate there we had to stand outside in the rain before we made it inside. The portions are huge!
If you have any others questions, please just ask. Like I said, Halloween time might be completly different and I am sure a lot more active with more activities. Have fun!

I love Salem! I have been going there for Halloween for the past 6 years! I will recommend you do not plan on bringing young children into most of the haunted houses/ships. They might be way too much for a child to handle. There are a ton of Museums and you can buy passes to get into a lot of the attractions at a much better rate than paying one by one. You need to go early in the day and stay all day, bring snacks, a wagon for the little one and plenty to drink. The parking is horrid. You will want to park in the center (with all the flags) which when it's getting dark can be very hard to get a space. I would suggest bringing rain gear and cold weather gear since you never know what is going to happen! (we leave ours in the car and walk back over when necessary.) The official website can give you lots of information about everything. Good Luck and Have Fun!!! (you can email the city with any questions and they will respond to you!!)

These are all separate museums that you can walk to. They're small and meant to be taken with a group 'tour'. As in, you go with a group, they walk you through and tell you the story/history. Some are crap and meant to be more 'haunted house' than history.
The thing to remember is there ARE a good amount of pagan/wicaan practitioners in the area. They are invested in educating people about their way of life, which is not devil worship but included villiage healers, herbalists, etc.. You can also learn about what happens when mass hysteria sets in and anyone who pisses you off can be labeled as a "witch" and burned at the stake. Or crushed to death. Or drowned.
I personally like the witch museum or the witch history museum (can't remember which (ha ha!)) and the pirate museum. It has nothing to do with witches, but maritime criminals from Salem's (and the North Shore's) fishing/shipping past.

Yes, they're all separate places. When you get to Salem, you can usually find a free tourist map that shows you how to get to all of these on foot. They're all a little different from each other, but all fun none the less. "House of the Seven Gables" has live actors renacting some of the witchcraft trials, "The Witch House" has a number of artifacts, etc. You can visit several of them on the same day.
The annual Salem Psychic Fair takes place every day throughout the month of October. It used to be held in Old Town Hall but in recent years it's been in a big room across from the movie theatre in the Museum Place mall. They have all different kinds of readings available (palm readings, Tarot cards, numerology, crystal ball, past life regression, mediumship, etc.). Also, for a $1 donation to fight breast cancer, there's a table with where kids can make their own magic wands.
Be forewarned though that anybody who does psychic readings professionally in Salem has to be registered with the city, so watch out for people claiming to give you your fortunes on the street for 5 bucks. Most of them in fact are just Holy-roller Bible nuts trying to trick tourists into attending one of their scare films or worse.
