Most modern psychologists think Freud was mainly a crock, but had some good ideas. They think he focused way too much on sex, but appreciate his work with the subconcious.

Some psychologists have a neofreudian approach to therapy. That means they accept parts of Freud's theory, but they interpret it in a more modern way.

Other psychologists think Freud's work is crap. He developed his theory based on a dozen of his female patients, and he didn't keep any record of his patients statements, he only kept his interpretations so there's no way of checking the validity of his claims.

However, psychology owes a lot to Freud. Before him, nobody was interested in dreams and the concept of unconsciousness. Dreams don't always show your hidden impulses, but sometimes they do. And the unconscious or subconscious is sometimes very powerful, it definitely has an impact on our behavior.

In short, psychology is in part based on Freud's observations, but modern psychology doesn't function on his theory alone.
The dominant orientation in therapy today is the cognitive-behavioral approach.

Sigmund Freud is often quoted, but todays psycholigists believe that he was way off the mark on many things. One such assumption of Freuds was that ALL mental problems stemmed from a sexual area, which has been proven as inaccurate. Quite personally, I believe that Freud had some sexual hang ups, one was his mother. He claimed that a persons first sexual partner was the mother, when a person was breast feeding, which is totally whacked, in my opinion

There are a few firm Freudian supporters out there still, but for the most part it's disregarded by most modern psychologists.

They are some of the most overcited, while well refuted the theories in psychology. No real psychologist credibly uses these theories.
