First off, this is a very personal and is different for every person. But I think someone who writes must have the following skills:
A strong knowledge of language and good communication skills. This is to best express their "vision" to a large audience. Stories and poems should flow and draw the reader on through the piece. Good use of imagery and detail while maintaining focus on the immediate story keeps the reader interested.
Secondly, a good imagination of course. Opening new worlds to people create interesting and enjoyable reading. However, with good skills as above you can make a well know story into a great re-telling.
Patience! It doesn't always come easy, and you will be faced with lots of rejection.

I wish you great success if you choose do write!

If you can communicate with someone across cultures and belief systems, make yourself understood through the common bond that some feel we do not even have, and write something that all of these people want to read, you become a great writer or poet. You simply have to write something that pretty much everyone wants to read.

It helps to have some technical knowledge of your craft, and it certainly helps to have a good publisher and distributor, but in the end it's that common bond that you develop through your prose or poetry that reaches out to similar and dissimilar minds. Sometimes we get a glimpse into a certain period of time, or event, but most often we get a glimpse inside of another way of thinking. Hope this helps.

I think there are probably infinite factors to what makes someone a great writer, including the personal tastes of a reader. One person's Shakespeare is another person's Sidney Sheldon. But, in my opinion here are a few things I think that make great writers:

- Unique voice
- Honesty
- Sense of rhythm (particularly poets)
- Sense of humor
- Respect for his/her readers (doesn't lie or pull cheap surprises)
- Tells a great story (entertains) and makes you think (enlightens)

These are the things that make think a writer or poet is great.

Hope that helps.

A poet who writes great poetry makes a great author. no longer being facicious right here, great poetry is interior the attention of the reader. It relies upon on who reads the poetry in spite of if is gets to 'great' status or no longer. Roses are crimson rhymes might desire to be considered great with the help of one group, and unfastened verse with the help of yet another. No specific factors will make a great author, till the readers agree. I certainly have in basic terms been at it approximately fifty one years, and in some circles i'm great, yet in others i'm mundane and uninteresting. would not somewhat matter type to me, I write for the organic relish it, and for the memory of my father who used to envision poetry books to me as a small newborn.

Pax has got it all wrong. No one is born a great writer or poet. It is simply something we inherit through endless skill revisions and the love of the craft.
