Everyone needs their own what I call "alone time". Some need it more than others. I think it is very important to our mental well being. We need to be able to think our thoughts without intrusion. Sometimes we wrestle with a complicated dilemma, or relive a memory, or just delight in something. Sometimes we read a good book or watch a movie or get on yahoo and answer questions. It is personal. It can be a time of quiet intensity that lets us relieve stress. We feel more focused and capable of dealing with life in general when we are able to shut out the very busy and sometimes relentless world even for a short span of time . . .

Solitude isn't bad. I'd have to say at some point everyone is going to need to be alone. Loneliness can be bad and people sometime confuse the two.

everyone needs time alone, to think and relax. Im and artist and I can never be totally creative around people, they always have something to distract, or feel left out if im quiet. It isn't good to be a loner all the time though, my one friend I know grew up sortve by himself, and he is quite odd I would say. Hes always out fishing by himself, doing everything by himself, and overall, hes a good person, but just has very weird traits, one being he can't compromise what he wants to do, it always has to be what he wants to do, and thats that. We all know you have to meet in the middle for alot of things, otherwise your just being controlled around doing stuff you dont' like.. So, no matter what, spend ur quality time by urself, but don't lock everyone out of ur life or youll end up crazy or sick in the head from to much think time ;) Help any?

Because most people have too little of it these days. If it's a pattern, that person may be depressed. Depressed people often become isolated and withdrawn. Offer to help them find the help they need if you think this might really be the case.

It gives you time to think and self-reflect. Some people are enegerized by doing such things. Also, it allows us to grow as individuals. Self-reflection is an important part of maturing as a human being.

It's not that they want solitude, they just don't want you around.

They are just not afraid of their own company. Of course that doesn't count for everybody, but a lot of people just can't be alone with themselves.
Been with somebody like that for FIVE years. (Oh my god, how did I do it?) And there always had to be distraction; TV, computer, other people, ect.
