Fear. People take comfort in habits and routines. Changes can throw them off, and interfere with a person's comfort zone.

People resist change when they feel secure with the status quo. The unknown is scary and usually requires added effort for those involved. Sometimes, people are just unwilling to expend the energy and brain power it takes to master a new way of doing things.
If you're talking about changing someone on a personal level, that's almost impossible to do. Only the person can change himself, and he has to really want to change.

People resist change because it is out of their comfort zone. People go through life with a routine and when thrown out of it confused, angry, sad, or even scared. Hence, to deny this sensation, the people generally avoid change because change takes work, it takes courage. Think: if you suddenly were forced to move because of your job would you want to? No! You wouldn't know anyone, you'd have to buy a house, and start a whole new life. People resist change like this even in less paramount changes.

I think it's because when things/people change then there's a certain loss of control. What was secure becomes insecure and no one likes to feel like that.
It's been my experience that resisting change only drains one of energy. It's much easier to accept and flow with it!
