I'm about to switch to verizon DSL and I know I need a wireless router. Can someone explain me what would be better, to buy a wireless router from verizon or buy one myself. Also, If I buy one myself, what kind of wireless router is the best for verizon DSL, which could get me the best performance and speed. If possible, please be specific on what type of wireless router it is.

understand three bands G, A, B type of broadband. Check if your wireless card is compatible with what all from above, so ur best speed is what both can support. What is speed of ur internet and what is speed of router ? There are speed-boosting routers which are bit costly. Good to have antinas on router. Lynksys & Netgear followed by D-link are good brands. For best speed u can always use wired interface.
Also, two input interfaces for internet are possible phone-like cable (ADSL) and TV-cable like interface. Also, see how many n/w ports are given and how many u need.
Play safe if u can, see what Vorizon gives u, and save ur purchace when u finish ur study.

Verizon gave me the wireless router, so don't know why they are charging you. The one they gave me is a Westell Versalink Model 327W. It works OK, I guess. Speed is fine. I run my desktop hardwired to it plus 2 wireless laptops. I have to reset the modem occasionally for my wife's laptop, but I think it's an issue with her LAN, not the modem.

I used to have a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router and that work fine also. I see no difference between the Westell and the Linksys.

Buy your own. Take a look at the Linksys WRT54G.

Buy a Linksys. You don't need the speedbooster if you run off of a notebook WiFi card. They don't usually go above 54mb.
