Just curious....anyone have a clue?

It's because of the ribbed edges on the top and bottom of the case.

According to the designer of the jewel case: “I specified polished ribs as they pick up the light and shine, making it (appear) even more hi-tech.” It was the final touch in the evolution of the design, earning the nickname ‘jewel case’.

They resemble jewelry cases. The kind jewelry comes in when it's new (hinged on one side).
