its a penny from 1943 and i think its made out of iron but im not sure

actually its zinc coated steel......in circualted condition they are fairly common....only worth maybe5-10 cents.....if it was copper than you would have your retirement in your hands....

It is steel coated with zinc. When this combination meets the elements it turns black and has a rusted look. It may have spent some time in the ground. The mintage for the 1943 with out a mint mark (struck at Philadelphia) is 684,628,670. That is a large amount and since they were different looking a lot were saved, even in poor to fair condition. Undamaged low grade coins sell for .02-.05. They are not worth all that in mint state. It is an interesting piece of history, if they had not needed copper for shell casings during WW II, the coin would not exist. it was a coin of the times, like a few others, that were a matter of necessity. Wars tend to do that.
