i hear halloween in salem is the mardi gras of the north, i've been to mardi gras and really don't want to have to deal with too many naked people...LOL. is there any ghetto areas or areas or 'hot spots' with alot of muggings and/or crime during halloween when the tourists are in record numbers? we want to have fun with the kids but want to make sure we are safe as well. any info would be appreciated. thanks.

I went last Halloween and it is a lot of fun for adults but I wouldn't take kids as young as yours unless you are off the streets before 6 or 7pm. We were out until they closed everything and the police made everyone go home. Didn't see any nudity unfortunately. They close most of the streets in the center of Salem and the traffic is terrible so arrive early in the morning and walk around all day and you will have a good time with the kids.

Salem at Halloween is a tourist trap, and I completely don't recommend it with children. The parking is horrible, and the sidewalks too congested to allow for strollers much (for the younger child). They will both get tired of walking around being jostled by strangers in punk goth drag! The stores are packed, the taxi drivers are surly, and the locals abandon the town in droves.

For adults with patience, you can go to the attractions the above poster mentioned, and there is a LOT of good history in Salem. But the month of October is simply not the time to go there with children in tow.

Salem is great! I go nearly every year. It is illegal to be in the cemetaries after dark. You could be arrested. I judge it to be pretty safe, especially during Halloween. There are safety in numbers. Outside of the downtown area, there are some dodgier areas. The most likely way to be robbed is some of their corny sideshow attractions. I recommend the Judge Corwin House, the Haunted Footsteps tour (not as stupid as some of the others), the Trial of Bridget Bishop, and the Peabody Essex Museum. It's a nice, friendly place. I also recommend going to Rebecca Nurse's homestead in Danvers. She was one of the victims of th witch trials. You might want to go in October but not on Halloween weekend. It's less wild, but all the tour and attractions are in full swing.

There's really nothing to avoid. Just keep a close eye on your kids, as it can get EXTREMELY hectic in Salem on Halloween. It gets so crowded it's easy to get separated. But, I wouldn't recommend anything specific to avoid.
