Hi there.
I work in a salon with tanning beds. Please make sure that you get a salon approved lotion.
I would start out with a "intensifier" or a light bronzer. NEVER EVER use a product with tingle, that will give you the burnt look. I also have light skin. I started out using a product called sex kitten by sweedish beauty and I now use 2 different lotions with bronzer the 1st is called bronze beauty, the 2nd is called priceless.
When you use a bronser make sure that you DON'T wipe it on in an up and down, you need to put it on in a circular motion, and wipe between your fingers. Contrary to popular belief, a bronzer will not turn you orange, professional lotion does not have enough DHA (the thing tat gives the sun kissed look/colour) in it.
Drugstore lotions however have tonnes and tonnes of DHA and they are not recommended for indooor tanning.
Remember when tanning to keep your skin exfoliated, and moisturized, this will help you keep your tan longer, help you tan faster and get darker sooner. Don't over do your tanning, one tanning session in a 48 hour period is sufficient.
If you have any more questions please feel free to e-mail me.
Sidebar: According to the American Academy of Dermatology,... DHA is a colorless chemical (it is derived from glycerin) that interacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown color change. Since these dead skin cells are constantly being shed, the color change produced by DHA usually lasts about five to seven days.
DHA is not absorbed through the skin into the body and it has no known toxicity. DHA was first discovered by the Germans in the late 1920's when DHA spilled on the skin produced a brown color. DHA has been listed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973, and has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years

My skin is super light too, and I can't tan either -- I burn after being in the sun for about a half an hour which is absolutely horrible! I've always hated my light skin, but the only thing that I can do about it is wearing sunscreen -- I really don't want skin cancer someday! I've found that almost all self-tanners don't work well -- they end up looking streaky, orangey, or just really unnatural (and believe me, I've tried many, many different brands.). Learn to love your pale skin -- I've received many compliments on it, believe it or not -- it's unique!! :D
Good luck -- hope this helps you!

Seems you have a few of us in agreement. Don't.
The sun will only damage your skin. Take pride in your complexion. I too grew up with fair skin. My sisters and brothers could tan but not I.
I love the outdoors. Gardening, swimming, fishing, picnics, bbq's, Wish there was more time in the summer for all that stuff. I am not supposed to be in those rays. I got near close to skin cancer on my face one year and scared the crap out of me. Since then I became more cautious. Learned to take pride in my complexion. Tanning does not always look healthy.

I also am very fair-skinned and have noticed that I go straight from pasty to burned, even if I'm out for a few minutes. I once tried to tan, and found that I looked really creepy (the darkness of my skin looked really bad next to my blue eyes.)
I recommend not trying to tan, because with such fair skin, you're very prone to serious skin cancer. Wear strong sunblock outdoors, and if you want to look a little darker, wear some light bronzer.

Hi, just go have a spray tan done, its so cheap now (£10-£20)and a lot of the ones available react to your skin tone, so u won't go orange or look over-tanned. Go on give it a try :O)

from someone who really didnt just try to get a tan..who is having funky little skin problems burned off on a regular basis...dont....just dont do this to your skin....use some of the self tanning products for extra color..but when you are in your 30's and older, you will be so glad...think age spots and wrinkles.....

If you have light skin, you shouldn't tan too fast.

Would you rather be pale or have skin cancer in a few years? Your choice.
