I have the plug in on my new computer as well as a regular modem not sure what the ethernet plug in is for

ethernet is for broadband (DSL or Cable). The regular telephone plug is for a dial up connection.

If your computer can detect wireless networks, then it has a wireless card inside.

Ethernet also applies to satellite internet.
