DSS are designed to help organizational decision-makers make decisions. Instead of providing summaries of data, as with an MIS (Management information system), a DSS provides interactive environment in which decision makers can quickly manipulate data and models of business operations.

-provides guidance on identifying problems
-finding and evaluating alternative solutions
-selecting or comparing alternatives
-often involves semi-structured problems and the need to access data at different levels of detail
