It is impossible to see a black hole, it would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Astronomers use clues to find back holes without actually seeing them. They see how a black hole may affect a nearby star or gas cloud.
The "first" discovery of a black hole was made by a satellite searching for x-rays in space. The satellite was looking in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan when it found x-rays coming from a star. This was weird because most stars are not hot enough to give off large amounts of x-rays.
Black holes do give off x-rays. As matter from a nearby star falls into a black hole, it is changed into energy, in the form of high temperatures. This energy is released from the black hole as x-rays. The x-rays found by the satellite were shown to have been coming from a point very close to the star. This made a strong case for a black hole.

Well, black holes are collapsed stars. Its complicated but when a star dies, sometimes it falls on itself. Its hard to study because satelites, probes and other electronic explorers would fall in. A few things about them are the fact that they have such a strong suction that even light can't escape it, hence its name.

You do not find a Black Hole by looking at one or looking for one. They are found by the influence they have on the space around them.

black holes can only be seen when they're attracting matter into them or when they're distorting light from another star.
