In my opinion, the best way to get perennials for your garden is to ASK YOUR FRIENDS for them!! I have several friends and we all love to garden, and when something grows well for us, once it is established we are willing to share. And, it's good for the plants to occasionally divide them anyway!
I've gotten wonderful peonies (which sell for $8 per tuber) from my friends. Also iris, daylilies, hostas, packysandra, artemesia, poppies and a few other things. So, start talking about gardens with your friends and ask if they are ever willing to divide their plants. Or perhaps join a local gardening club. Early spring is a great time to divide perennials, before buds are established and before it's so hot that new newly planted roots get burned.
GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!!!!

I would first go to a website like wayside gardens and type in your zone and see if any plants appeal to you, when you start shopping for plants you dont want to buy any plants that have yellow leaves or webs or bug's on them, I have found that all plant nurserys have an occasional bad plant but then you have to realize if you plant the plant right and take care of it, it will give you many years of beautiful flowers and then when you start dividing the plant it will give you many plants,I have even bought pretty bad looking plants in the fall on clearance and they have come back to be great plants-Good luck!

The nursury is the best and ask them what grows best in your area. Look around at other people's gardens and ask them. Bulbs are wonderful because they come back year after year.
