First, while the Christians fought for the Holy Land through the Crusades, beginning in 1095, they did not retain possession of it. That's why there ended up being far more Crusades than just one.
The Muslims retained control of the Holy Land, traditional Palestine, up until the British partitioned the land formally at the end of WW II. In a way it was a reparation for the fact that the British and the Americans waited so long before the acted to stop Hitler's genocide against the Jews during the 1930s and early 1940s.
The problem with dividing up the land and giving pieces of it to the Jews was that the land being given to the Jews was occupied and possessed by Palestinian Arabs, a place they had held possession of, almost exclusively for 1,700 years! Needless to say the Palestinian Arabs protested this giving away of their land and the battle for the land of Israel and Palestine continues to this day.
