Isn't it actually lotteries supporting governments?

They have already taken a hit on cigarette taxes...lots of people quitting and dying. Sure they make lots of cash from booze; but is it enough to fill the government coffers? Absolutely not. Lotteries are just another form of taxation. If they didn't have lotteries, they would lose billions of dollars in revenue. The day they stop supporting lotteries, will be the same day they stop collecting income tax......and I guess that is when hell freezes over.

If the NYS lotteries were banned, the New York City schools would be a complete chaotic mess instead of only a tangled mess. So far, the New York State lottery has raised $29 billion for NYC schools.

No. The lotteries generate great revenue for their local governments, which are used in positive ways. Granted, there are some gambling addicts out there that ruin their lives because of it. But if they weren't doing it gambling, they would only be doing it in some other fashion.
